Organisation

Tūhono (meaning to link or connect) is an advocate for and contributes to a network of Māori individuals, iwi organisations and other entities who engage with each other in fostering the identity, well being and potential of Māori.

Our business

Our business is to ensure the promotion of:

  • Spiritual and cultural wellbeing
  • Education and personal development
  • The relief of poverty through developing potential
  • Enhancement of and benefit to the community
  • Inclusive access, participation and accountability

We do this through our competencies of strategic networking, data management and innovation, and offer a service which ensures inclusive access, participation and accountability across the network.

Tūhono is Kaitiaki of the register of iwi affiliation, established under the Electoral Act 1993. The register enables Tūhono to achieve its charitable objectives by facilitating links, communication and interaction between iwi and their members

Tūhono Māori/Tūhono whanau

Tūhono provides a network with over 100,000 registered Māori and over 70 Iwi organisations who need to know where you are. Tūhono provide a service where Māori are able to register with their Iwi and therefore ensure your iwi has your up-to-date contact details. Tūhono is set up as a proactive initiative to help Māori and their whanau by:

  • Fostering cultural and tribal wellbeing.
  • Encouraging higher levels of communication between iwi and their people.
  • Nurturing their wellbeing and developing their potential.
  • Developing an inclusive network for Māori and the whanau.
  • Establishing links with their iwi.

How Registration Works

When you register with Tūhono your name and contact details go into a National database or master database. The Iwi that you affiliate to can access your information online, but only those Iwi you select on your form can access your information, no-one else! Your privacy and the security of your information is number one priority for Tūhono.

The main advantage for you is that your contact details are automatically updated every month, when you update your electoral details. The Electoral Enrolment Centre in turn is updated by the:

  • Ministry of Transport
  • Land Transport
  • New Zealand Post
  • Department of Internal Affairs (Deed Poll, and Births, Deaths and Marriages)

You can also access and update your own details online if you prefer, using your Tūhono Identification Number (TIN) and secure password.
